Some Land Bank Plays are popping, But There’s a Whole Set of them Still On Sale

With gold hovering around $1,800, even non-gold bugs are noticing that it’s within easy reach of making new all-time-highs. The once lofty idea of $2,000 gold is now a target many see as easily doable. The fundamental reasons for this are so obvious, mainstream analysts are jumping on the bandwagon—like those at Bank of America who made their now-famous call for $3,000 gold.

This is having an interesting effect that’s no surprise to savvy resource speculators: land bank (“optionality”) plays are popping.

What’s a land bank?

It’s a company that buys large known deposits of valuable minerals at dirt-cheap prices while prices are low—and then does nothing until prices rise. Instead of spending money—and diluting shareholders—the gold, copper, or whatever it is stays safely in the ground, which makes for a better vault than any regular bank can provide.

When prices do start rising, land bank plays often see their share prices soar as investors realize that what was once worthless might soon be worth billions.

I’ve pointed out before that this strategy is not guaranteed to work, and often takes far longer than most impatient speculators are willing to wait. But I have to say that this year, it’s happening with exceptional speed and strength.

If you haven’t looked into this, there’s no time like the present.

It shouldn’t be hard to find helpful articles by doing web searches for “optionality” or “land bank.”

But what do I think—is it too late? Do I have a list of gold land banks? And are there any other land banks that have not yet started taking off?
